  24. In 1900 Max Planck, a professor of theoretical physics in Berlin showed that when you vibrate atoms strong enough, such as when you heat an object until it glows, it emits radiation in separate bursts of energy. He called these energy bursts quanta.

  26. It was thought at the time that light consisted of waves. But the quanta behaved like particles and, in turn, these particles of light were named photons.
